六月有奖征文:Cultural communication

作者:李超 | 来源:宁波光华学校

There are four forergn English teachers in our school.Every day we greet each other happily and sincerely.Of these foreign English teachers,I am very familiar with a knowledgeable and humorous teacher,Jonathan, who comes from America.Although, there is an age difference,he often calls me brother. Also he often says,we are good friends. But acturally we have dfifferent cultural backgrounds and our scope of knowledge is different, especially when it comes to language.

When different cultures meet, some funny things will occur. One day,Jonathan said several Chinese sentences ,“ni jiao shen mo ming zi?ni ji sui le?”etc.to me .Meanwhile,he asked me to translate for him.I helped him gladly. In my view, these sentences are quite easy, but some strange things happened. One day,he and I went to The Exit-Entry Administration of the Ministry of Public Security of People’s Republic of China for his visa. On the wall, there is a Chinese sentence服务无止境, ,but English translation is that “service is limitless.” “It’s unbelievable,it’s chinglish,”he said to me quietly. In reality,it should be translated as “to serve you forever”.At that moment,I admired him deeply. In addition,I learned some English slang phrases from him, such as “small potatoes, rubber necking, big babies,” etc.In China, as we all know, the term “small potatoes” means potaoes that grow so slowly or are too young. But in American slang,it means common people not leaders.Rubber necking doesn’t mean somebody who wants to clean his or her neck, but it has another meaning as follows. For Chinese English learners,if we met some traffic accidents or traffic jams, maybe we would wait in line. However,in USA,they will slow down their cars to find out what happened. As it happens,we are both sports lovers, especially Chinese football.I still remembered a football match in National Football Tournament 12,China vs Iran.We watched this important game, during which one Chinese football player was challenging an Iranian player for the ball.To our surprise, they didn’t have any physical contact, howerver, the Iranian player fell down, crying. Meanwhile,Jonathan exclaimed “big babies”.What did this phrase mean?I was puzzled. He noticed my puzzled expression. And explained that “big babies” means someone who pretended to be attacked. The more he and I communicate, the more knowledge we will acquire.

Another example of cultural differences in communication between Jonathan and I took place not long ago on the school sports ground.  One Sunday morning, when he was off work but school was still in session; Jonathan went for his daily bike ride up the mountain and along the coastline, as is his usual routine.  After entering the school gate upon his return, Jonathan decided to veer wildly onto the sports ground.  At that time, the track was filled with hundreds of marching and running high school students.  Jonathan didn’t seem to mind or care!  He just plowed through the groups of kids as if they were not even there.  It seemed he was oblivious to their welfare and safety.  Not only that, he wasn’t even wearing a proper shirt!!!!!  Most of the students and teachers, especially the females let out an audible gasp.  He then proceeded to  the exercise area and performed thirty chin-ups with his exposed  muscles glistening in sweat in the morning sun. Some leaders and P.E. teachers, after getting over their initial shock, erupted in fury at ME!!!!  AS, the foreign teachers are partly my responsibility, they said I need to explain to Jonathan the danger he just put us all in.  So I ran over to him and told him, as kindly as I could, that he should never do anything like this again.  Jonathan was absolutely stunned!!!!  He had no idea that he did anything wrong.   About the no shirt he said it was “hot”. To this day, he STILL thinks what he did was correct and that at no time was anyone in danger of bodily injury as he is a skilled biker.  But, to his credit he agreed to not repeat today’s actions again.  He then profusely apologized to the teachers and leaders and begged their forgiveness.  To steal a line from Hollywood, “what we have here, is FAILURE to communicate”.

As we all know, China is a great country with a long history.  China has an open mind to welcome guests from all over the world.  Also, China is a country that loves to learn knowledge from other countries.  In short, we Chinese people are especially friendly when foreigners try and communicate with us as well as try to understand our cultural sensitivities.
